Putting the Rabbit in the Hat

Intentions and Ideas

On this Friday afternoon, I’m pleased to announce that I am reading Brian Cox’s Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. I’m an avid fan of the HBO series Succession, and certainly an admirer of Cox’s acting style. His rags-to-riches life story piques my interest in his perspective on a layered and sometimes tumultuous industry.  Overall, I’m looking to enjoy the first autobiography I’ve had the chance to read. Typically, I stick to works of fiction, so I’m exercising a different mindset to approach this novel with an open curiosity.

Impressions

So far, I’ve been met with a gracious description of Brian Cox’s infamous spirit, as written by Frank Rich. Cox’s character comes across as strong-willed and direct. In the foreword, Rich describes Cox through the lens of his talent in embodying Logan Roy in Succession, which made the introduction of the novel all the more familiar.

Moving further into my reading, Brian’s depth and candor is a treat! His almost immediate bad-mouthing of those in the film industry resonated with me, as I enjoy casting judgement here and there. More than this, his raw experiences and the lessons he learned come across the same way as if I were speaking to my parents or grandparents; very familiar in tone, with a kick of honesty to keep things lively. How interesting, I think, that an actor’s autobiography almost immediately discusses letting go of ego. I’m thrilled by the energy thrown at the reader, and am excited to continue digesting this book over the fall semester.
