Putting the Rabbit in the Hat
πFinal Thoughtsπ
As an avid fan of the HBO show Succession, I was very excited to read Brian Cox's Putting the Rabbit in the Hat. His autobiography appealed to me because of the dynamic of his character in the show, and the way that reflected his actual values and appeal as a person. I was intrigued to learn more about not only Brian Cox's life, but also to glean some general life advice. His novel went above and beyond my expectations as he reflected on topics of resilience, struggles, and the power of persistence.
Throughout the novel, his wit surprised me. Immediately, I was met with a hearty sense of humor which made the reading experience exciting. As he got into more sensitive topics, I felt that his writing style reflected a more genuine attitude, allowing me to further connect to his story. Going into this reading, I knew that he had struggled in the early parts of his career. His transparency with his mental health was refreshing and almost surprising because of the strong figure he's known to be. When he spoke about not wanting to get out of bed when he felt like acting was a “way out” of his pain I thought it made him a very strong author and worthwhile person to learn from.
From struggles comes grit, and Brian Cox certainly has his fair share of resilience. He particularly highlights this through the lens of being an actor. However, I think the main points he gives readers can be applied across all studies and professions. One of the things he said that resonated was that you don't survive by being the best; you survive by being persistent. This mentality reshaped my perspective on a career and what success looks like. While I haven't personally experienced any significant setbacks I think that having this mindset creates a high level of resilience towards future challenges.
Overall, I cannot recommend Putting the Rabbit in the Hat enough. As someone who typically doesn't venture into a nonfiction or even autobiographical genre for casual reading, I found his novel to be insightful reading experience. For anyone interested in a book a story with a strong perspective and quality takeaways, look no further!

ReplyDeleteSuccession is also one of my favorite shows as well. I watched it with my dad when it first came out. I love Brian Cox's language and diction throughout the whole novel and did not expect the incredible backstory that he had and the life he has lived. I thought it was a great read.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds so cool! I especially like how you included the part about being persistent instead of being the best, thats something I think of often as I think discipline is more important than natural talent in many cases.
