Resilient (Book 2, Post 1)

Resilient: How to Grow and Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness

For Book Two, I’ve decided to read Resilient: How to Grow and Unshakable Core of Calm, Strength, and Happiness by Rick Hanson, PhD. I was really on the fence, as there were so many thoughtful books to choose from. One of the things that drew me to this choice was the student review provided by Professor Hansen. The blogger mentioned that they had a lot of smaller takeaways on various topics, and this piqued my interest. After the last book, I realized my brain is too fried from social media to absorb any content denser than maybe two paragraphs. The fact that this option covered a breadth of topics tells me that my horrifically low attention span might be more involved than otherwise.

As for the book’s content, I think building mental resources and resilience is incredibly important at this stage in my life, where I don’t know where I’ll be five years from now. The turbulence of this period is daunting, and I think any tools I can receive from this book would be helpful in navigating my twenties. Personal and mental growth are big motivators for me, consistently pushing me out of my comfort zone. At the very beginning of Hanson’s book, he writes, “Most of the beneficial experiences that people have are wasted on their brains.”  I’m interested to see the tools he offers his readers for gleaning more than a memory out of their life experiences. Overall, I’m entering this reading with an open and optimistic perspective, eager to strengthen my mental resources.
